Private Royal Deeside & Balmoral Castle Tour Itinerary
* Note: Because this is a private tour, the exact route is customisable. Here is an example of what your day could look like!
Morning: Crathes Castle & Highland Cows Let me pick you up directly from your hotel or cruise ship. We’ll leave the city behind and follow the winding, scenic route of the River Dee into the heart of Royal Deeside. Our first stop is the magnificent Crathes Castle. Known as the "jewel in our crown," this 16th-century tower house boasts a Disney-esque exterior, remarkably preserved interiors, and world-famous walled gardens. Of course, no Highland morning is complete without stopping to see our famous, hairy Highland Cows along the way!
Mid-Morning: Coffee Break in Historic Ballater Next, we drive deeper into the beautiful scenery to the charming Victorian town of Ballater for a mid-morning coffee break. We will stretch our legs and explore on foot, visiting Queen Victoria's Old Royal Station and the independent shops that hold the prestigious Royal Warrant, giving you a taste of local Highland life.
Early Afternoon: Lunch & Exploring Balmoral Estate For lunch, we will head straight to Queen Victoria's "Dear Paradise in the Highlands"—the Balmoral Estate. We will enjoy a fantastic lunch right at the castle before spending the early afternoon exploring the royal grounds, gardens, and exhibitions (open from April to early August) to learn about this unique part of Scotland's history.
(Alternatively, if you prefer to taste Scotland's national drink, we can swap the castle grounds for a visit to the nearby Royal Lochnagar Whisky Distillery for an intimate tasting tour!)
Late Afternoon: Alpine Braemar We finish our scenic drive in Braemar, an alpine-like village nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. Here, we can learn about the Earls of Mar, view the quirky Braemar Castle, or pop into the spectacular, world-class Fife Arms Hotel to admire its incredible art collection before we begin our relaxing drive back to Aberdeen.

Yes! Many of my US clients visit Aberdeenshire to explore their heritage. If you have family ties to the Royal Deeside area, let me know when booking, and we can customise our route to visit specific clan lands, graveyards, or historic sites.
