What “Green Tourism” means to Highland Journeys…

Lossiemouth, Morayshire, Scotland

Over the coming months I am going to be writing about various topics with an interest in sustainability and green tourism:

  • Food & drink in Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire

  • Where to stay in Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire

  • Castles & historic sites of interest in Aberdeenshire

  • Biodiversity

In our business, Highland Journeys, which is a guided tour company based just outside Aberdeen, we are excitedly waiting to hear back from the Green Tourism Assessors about our application which we recently submitted. During the in-depth process of gathering all the information for Green Tourism it became clear that 1 of our big interests is the local food & drink scene and its provenance. We understand that whilst on holiday in another country sampling the local food is such a big part of the trip and we want to share some of our finds and local delicacies along the way!

Good Local Food in Aberdeenshire

Fife Arms Hotel, Braemar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

When we are out and about on our Tour of Dunnottar Castle & Stonehaven, we like to recommend stopping at The Ship Inn, Stonehaven and sample the local fish chowder, known as Cullen Skink and also try a dish of freshly caught langoustines, all washed down with a pint of local beer, Six Degrees North, Stonehaven.

When we are out and about on our Royal Tour, in the Cairngorms National Park and visiting the quaint village of Braemar, we like to recommend a visit to the impressive Fife Arms Hotel, Braemar. Here you can sample their seasonal menu where everything is sourced from local suppliers, gamekeepers and farmers. It is all delicious!

One of my favourite seafood restaurants in Aberdeen and one that I like to recommend to my visitors if they are staying for a few days is the Silver Darling, Aberdeen. It certainly has the best views in town! Perched on the edge of Aberdeen Harbour, the restaurant is situated inside the old Customs House. Here you can hire the Captain’s Table if you want a private room for that special occasion. The seafood is delicious; all locally caught and you can also enjoy the fresh “Market Catch of the Day”.

Next month we will be writing about “Where to Stay” from bothies to top notch boutique hotels.
